storiaearte_settsanta1Staging the events of the passion and death of Christ, the rituals of the Holy Week present a multi-coloured spectacle of authentic popular religiousness in Sicily. It offers an opportunity for an unforgettable trip that will take you to the roots of Sicilian faith.

Day 1
Palm Sunday at Piana degli Albanesi
After arriving in Palermo, departure for Piana degli Albanesi to watch the rite of the ‘entrance into the town’ of the Bishop riding a donkey, in memory of Jesus’ entrance to Jerusalem. Overnight stay in Palermo.

Monday: Palermo and Vicinity
After breakfast, tour of the city: Arab domes, Norman churches and buildings, medieval markets, Renaissance and Baroque gardens. Continuation on to Monreale, to admire the Cathedral with its precious mosaics and the Cloister of the Benedictine
monastery with its Moorish architecture. Dinner and overnight stay in Palermo.

Tuesday: Procession of the Madonna dei Massari in Trapani
After breakfast, departure for Erice, an atmospheric medieval village of ancient Greek origin. In the afternoon, transfer to
Trapani to see the procession of the Madonna dei Massari, organized by the descendents of the furniture carriers, within
the framework of the rituals connected with the famous Mysteries of Trapani that take place on Good Friday.

Wednesday: the Royal Workers of Caltanissetta
Four hundred heirs of the ancient Guilds of the city will parade in black dress. The procession, led by the Captain
of the Workers, in 18th-century garb, will reach the Cathedral.

Holy Thursday: the Jews of San Fratello storiaearte_settsanta2
After breakfast, departure for Cefalù, for a visit to the Cathedral with its refined Byzantine mosaics. In the
afternoon, continuation on to San Fratello for the Festival of the Jews, during which several of the town’s inhabitants pretend to be Christ’s killers celebrating his death. Dinner and overnight stay in Cefalù.

Good Friday: Procession of the Hooded Men at Enna
Breakfast and departure for Piazza Armerina, for a visit to the Villa Romana del Casale (3rd century A.D.). In the afternoon, transfer to Enna to watch the procession of hooded men, and to Pietraperzia for that of “Lu Signuri di li fasci”. Dinner and overnight stay in Enna.

Holy Saturday: the Temples of Agrigento and the Mysteries of Trapani
Breakfast and departure for Agrigento, with a tour of the city’s chief monuments and of the Valley of the Temples. In the evening, a possible stop in Trapani for the ‘Return of the Mysteries to the Purgatorio Church’. Dinner and overnight stay.

Easter: the Archery of San Biagio Platani and the “Abballu di li Diavoli” at Prizzi
Breakfast and departure for San Biagio Platani, to watch a competition between rival confraternities: Madonnara and Signurara. Continuation on to Prizzi to watch the “abballu di li diavoli e lu ncontru”: two devils try in vain to prevent the Madonna’s meeting with Christ. Departure from Palermo airport.
