A week of not-to-be-missed excursions along the secret paths of the woods of Aspromonte, the Sila, and the Pollino Park. The uncontaminated nature offers views of spectacular landscapes, amidst rocky walls and vast sunny valleys, streams, and centuries-old trees.
Day 1
Gambarie d’Aspromonte and Vicinity
Arrival in Reggio Calabria, check-in at hotel, and technical illustration of the program. The first excursion starts from Gambarie, the main center of the Aspromonte area; from there we will go on foot through woods of beech trees, silver firs, and larch pines, fording small streams and torrents.
2
Torrents and Waterfalls in the Park
Breakfast and transfer to Cittanova. Excursion on foot into the northeastern area of the Aspromonte park, particularly rich with springs that make the walk even more spectacular. Toward evening, transfer to Catanzaro and check-in at hotel.
3
The Soleo Torrent and the Ancient Beech Woods (Little Sila)
Breakfast and transfer to Buturo. The path leads to the Valle del Crocchio and continues, through a dense wood, toward sunny meadows, crossed by streams flowing into the Soleo torrent, forming crystalline waterfalls. We will reach the Gariglione forest station, and then continue to the mountain’s summit, through the wood of secular beech trees.
4
The Roe Deer Around the Fossiata Dell (Big Sila)
Breakfast and transfer to Camigliatello Silano, as far as Fossiata. The large dell is surrounded by woody hills, where it is easy to encounter roe deer, martens, and black squirrels. From the equipped area we proceed, going into the larch-pine forest, up to the “Cozzo del Principe” summit, which offers a view of Lake Cecita. From there, we continue toward the “Bosco del Corvo” woods, as far as Cupone. In the evening, transfer to a hotel in the Castrovillari area.
5
The National Park of the Pollino
Breakfast and transfer to Piano Ruggio, a broad karst plateau, where we will begin an excursion into the National Park. The Belvedere terrace offers a sweeping view over the Castrovillari plain and the rocky ridges of Serra del Prete, as far as the sea. It is easy to observe the flight of large birds of prey, ravens and honey buzzards.
6
The Summit of Monte Pollino
Breakfast and departure for Colle Impiso; from there we will ascend to the summit of Mt. Pollino (2,248 m), the heart and
symbol of the park. The landscape is dominated by the specimens of loricate pine (including the patriarch, which is 930 years old) and the view of the other peaks of the imposing Massif.
7
Return
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to the Castrovillari train station or Lamezia Terme airport.
