Trapanibike

naturaesport_trapanbike1Because of its luminosity and relaxing roads, the land of Trapani is perfect for the "bicycle-goer". You will pedal along among Doric temples and iridescent salt pans. And you will become intoxicated in the vineyards of international fame, re-emerging in the North African and Garibaldian atmospheres of the coast.

Day 1
Erice, the Learned
From the Falcone-Borsellino airport, transfer to Erice. Check-in at hotel, dinner, and evening walk along the little streets.
2
Sweets at Marsala and … Salt Pans at Mothia
Departure at 10 a.m. for Mazara del Vallo, with a stop at Marsala (1/2 hr). Visit to the salt pans and Island of Mothia
(stop 1 hr). Lunch and wine-tasting at the Marsala vineyard (stop 2 hrs). Descent from Erice (approx. 12 km, average slope
6%), continuing for 55 km on flat terrain. Time necessary (not including stops, average speed 20 km/hr): about 3 hrs.
3
North African and Greek Atmospheres
Visit to the canal-port of Mazara, the historic center, and the ‘Gorghi tondi’. Departure for Castelvetrano (40 km), passing through the sea village of Granitola-Torretta (stop 1/2 hr) and the Quarries of Cusa (1 hr). Destination: the archaeological site of Selinunte (2 hrs with lunch). Transfer to Castelvetrano with tour of the town, dinner, and overnight stay. Flat terrain; distance covered (not counting stops): 2hrs.
4
To Castelvetrano and Up Toward Salemi naturaesport_trapanbike2
Visit to the medieval chapel of S.S. Trinità di Delia and the nearby lake (10 km there and back and stop: 1 hr). Continue to the village of Salemi (approx. 33 km., 446 m above sea level.) where it will be possible to visit the medieval castle (1 hr). Technical lunch while riding to Marsala (approx. 35 km from Salemi, arrival 3.30 p.m.). Dinner and overnight stay.
This stretch is the most interesting from the technical standpoint because of the greater distance to be covered and the ascent to Salemi. Between Lake Trinità and thevillage of Salemi the average speed will drop to 15 km/hr because of the increase in the average slope (4%). Between Salemi and Marsala the average will rise again to 20 km/hr. Expected time: 4 1/2 hrs for a total of approx. 78 km.
5
Valderice, on the Road Back
The tour will continue to Trapani along the luminous roads of the hinterland (approx 45 km). Overnight stay at Valderice (Baglio Santa Croce, SS 187 km 2300). The average slope is 2%, so that the distance can be covered in about 2 hrs.
6
Great Coastal Stretch
Final stretch with a panorama over the northwestern coast of Trapani, from Valderice to the center of Custonaci. Visit to the marble quarries. Continue through seaside villages of Cornino and San Vito Lo Capo. Dinner and overnight stay at San Vito. The Valderice-Custonaci is fun because of the frequent changes in slope. The second stretch, to San Vito, is a
gradual descent.
7
Return
Breakfast and departure from the Falcone-Borsellino airport.
