The Woods of the Nebrodi

naturaesport_iboschideinebrodi1If you think of Sicily as burnt by the sun, the Nebrodi will be a surprise for you; green and abounding in water, sinuous high grounds cloaked in beech woods and crossed by tortuous torrents and mossy, peony-lined paths leading to clear lakes, and extraordinary oases for fauna.

Day 1
In the Sicilian Capital
Transfer to the hotel from Palermo airport. Dinner and overnight stay.
2
Art On the Sea and Along the Torrent
Leaving the picturesque hotel, Atelier sul Mare, with its artists’ rooms, we go up the Tusa torrent, an “open-air museum”
of sculptures, and arrive at the panoramic path from which it will be possible to admire the historical centres of Motta
D’Affermo and Pettineo and the ancient town of Mistretta, speckled with beautiful churches. Overnight stay at the hotel. 7-hr walk.
3
Green Ascent to Sambughetti and Campanito
Starting from the town of Mistretta, we reach Portella del Contrasto. From here we ascend to the green Sambughetti and Campanito Mountains. Return and overnight stay at the hotel.
4
Walking Through the Woods naturaesport_iboschideinebrodi2
Walking along a regia trazzera (sheep track), through a dense ilex grove, we arrive at the lovely little Urio Quattrocchi
lake, populated by a rich aquatic fauna that includes the rare marsh turtle. The hike continues amidst the sumptuous Medda and Mascellino woods, where it is possible to see specimens of yew and, when the season is right, we may also find exquisite mushrooms. Camp-out in tents. 6-hr walk.
5
Bird Songs
After crossing Portella dell’Obolo we continue, going along Monte Pelato, towards Portella Miraglia. The silence of these places is sometimes interrupted by the singing of diurnal and nocturnal birds or by the hurried stamping of the hoofs of wild pigs, which can be easily seen in small groups. Overnight stay at the hotel. 7-hr walk.
6
A Day at the Lake
First Monte Soro, the highest peak of the Nebrodi (1847 m), and then the Biviere di Cesarò, a lake basin of vital importance
for the hydrophilous vegetation and the migratory avifauna thriving there. From here, the view stretches to the Rocche del
Crasto, the dominion of the eagles; we then arrive at our destination: Margio Soprano. Camp-out in tents. 7-hr walk.
7
Moist Sicily
The walk is gladdened by the view of another lovely body of water, the Trearie, which is the highest wet zone of Sicily. Then, along tracks and paths that lead first to Monte Colla and then to the Alcantara River, we reach Randazzo to prepare for departure. 7-hr walk.
